Slow performance

I'm writing this from a remote site, cuz otherwise I'd be up all nite. The
problem with this is, I won't be able to try any suggestions right away. The
system in question is an HP Pavillion a520n running WXP, IE 7.2. From the
time one tries to boot up the system to get a page open is very slow. I've
tried running the Mcafee virus scanner, scan disc, cleared the cookies, temp
IE files, defragged, running Spybot S&D & even went to add/remove programs to
remove any unnecessary memory users all to no avail! Poss. once the internet
is accessed, going from page to page might be a bit faster, but opening up
the my documents folder takes way too long still. I've gotten on the phone w/
my ISP and the ping time checks out OK and the cable modem seems to be
reponding as expected.I do have a svc agreement w/ Best Buy for the hard
drive, but I really hope I can fix it myself. Thanks for any ideas!

Sorry, the IE I meant 7.0. Also, by remote I mean far away! :). After posting
this, I looked @ other posts and found advice about my same problems from
previously. I KNEW I should have gone to this newsgroup site B4 leaving my
sister's computer! Thanks anyway for the help.

How much RAM?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Do you leave your computer on 24/7?

Hope this helps.

I hope this is what you needed. I got the info about the defrag analyze sent
by e mail. Do you need that info also? Thanks.

You have not answered these questions.

A Disk Defragmenter report might help.

How long does the McAfee subscription have to run?

The C.

I would turn off your "Tea Timer" in SpyBot for it maybe conflicting with
your McFee software.

The pagefile usage on the figures you provide is marginal but I get the
feeling they may represent typical usage.

The Disk Defragmenter report is for the D partition not C. Can you
please provide a copy of the Report for C.

Does the McAfee subscription expire on 9 January 2009 or 1 September
2009?

It's quite possible you have a malware infection. You first need to rule
that out. Please see:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Viruses_Malware

Svchost.exe is a valid file *if* it is in the correct location, which
should be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32

If you have another one of these, it's surely malware.

Search your entire C: drive for svchost.exe. In "More advanced options,"
be sure to check "Search system folders" and "Search subfolders." Again,
if you see another instance of svhost.exe where it doesn't belong, you
have a malware infection!
