Slow spooling?

I have a user who's PC is slow to spool.

His PC: a brand new Dell OptiPlex GX620 (P4 3.6 GHz, 2 gig RAM) with a 250
gig SATA drive. Basically, the thing is quick. WinXP Pro SP2 installed.
Network clients/services: We only use Client for MS networks, TCP/IP, and
File and Print sharing on our network. Nothing else is necessary.

Specifics of the problem: When he prints a document out to any network
printer (no local printers installed), it will go to the spooler, but will be
sent VERY SLOWLY. At 24 bytes/second to be exact. This is a pain when he
needs to print large documents.

Network connections are intact...can connect to other PCs fine, can get
around the internet fine, no connectivity issues there. Spooling services
have been restarted both on his PC and the print servers. I've ran a disk
cleanup on his PC, and a defrag. Drivers are current. Printing directly to
the printer is not an option available on the network. No other documents
are in the queue either.

Anybody have any ideas what could be causing this slow spooling? It seems to
be just on his PC too.

As a bit of an update, it has now been found out that another user is
experiencing the same problem. He too, just received a new PC (the same one
as the other user) and is now experiencing this slow spooling problem. The 2
users are in the same office, printing to the same printers. We've asked our
network guys to reboot the print servers and see if that helps.

Frank, I am interested if you have had any luck solving your spooling
problem; I have a pc having a similar problem. My IT person thought it had
to do slow processor and low RAM (800 Mhz and 512 Mb); however, since we
appear to be having similar problems and your pc is obviously good in terms
of RAM and processor, I am not sure it is RAM and processor related.

I haven't gotten the solution for the user I'm dealing with, but my fellow
tech solved the problem with his user.

He had to go into the network card settings and change the link speed &
duplex mode and everything's okay. It was set to auto detect, but we changed
it to 100 Mbps for the link speed and Full Duplex mode.

(right-click My Network Places, choose Properties, then r/c on the LAN,
choose properties, and then choose Configure for the network adapter and go
to the Advanced tab)

I could've sworn I had my user's PC set to those, but I guess I'll see again
whenever he gets back in the office.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, my machine already had the card set for
100 Mbps and Full Duplex (we have 100 Mbps network connection). This user is
due for an upgrade, so maybe now is the time to do it. I am curious though,
let me know if you find a fix.
