Slow shutting down....

T

Ted Gervais

Windows XP Home takes forever to close down. It sits at a nothing window
and takes about 5 mins or so just to get to the choice where you tell it to
restart, or shutdown.. etc.. Once that happens it seems to settle down and
will eventually close.

I even tried doing the 3 finger salute to see if I could close something
that was running. All I saw was the idling process at 97%. I tried to kill
that and things more or less froze up. I finally just waited and waited and
waited... and a long time later it finally asked if I wanted to shutdown or
restart..

Any thoughts on what is happening here?? And funny thing - is that if I
bring up WindowsXP and decide to close it right away, things work perfectly.
Its just after it has been running for a while that things seem to bog right
down..

Hi

Have you got any particular program(s) running when you try to shut down?

Sorry I forgot to mention. Everything is closed down (nothing running) when
I go to shut the computer down.

Hi

There could be a Process running that is causing the problem. Have a look
in Task Manager next time before you shutdown and on the Processes tab click
on 'CPU'. Which Process(es) are taking up the Most %?

Hi

Yes - could be an option, but I've never used it myself before though.

I'm the only user on this XP Pro machine, and it reduced shutdown time
considerably.
