Slow properties response in XP

Certifiable

On a WinXP machine when I select a large number of files within a folder to
determine their total size using Properties the response can
take 20-30 seconds.
Doing the same on a Win98 machine with the same folder and files
the response is within a second or 2.
Is there a service or someting running in Windows Explorer
in XP that would slow down the Properties function?
I have indexing disabled.
