Slow Processor

I have Win XP and my processor just started being extremely slow in the past week. I did the usual Defrag, scandisc, cleaned Internet explorer, limited start-up info, and even deleted alot of things on msconfig. What else can I do? It's extremely sluggish. I scanned for that new virus and that turned out ok.

Eric,

Go to Start, Run and run "taskmgr".

Open Processes tab and click on "Mem Usage" to sort with highest usage at
the top. This will allow you to check what processes are chewing up your
processor/memory. Before you "end process" on any of these it will be wise
to look for the file in your C drive and check properties to see what it
does (assuming that the name isn't obvious). If you still have problems,
report back here with a reply listing the top 5 or so "mem usage" entries
and one of us might be able to help you further.

What type of processor are you running?(P4, Celeron,
etc.), and what is the CPU speed in MHz or GHz? In the
bios, check that L1/L2 internal and external cache is
enabled. If this is a new computer/motherboard: Check the
CPU bus speed setting. Initially, the jumper (JP2) was set
to 'Auto' from the manufacturer (L4VXA2 P4 motherboard;
Celeron 2.66 GHz CPU, 400 MHz FSB) Changed it to '533'
(I'm running one stick of 512 MB DDR RAM. When I first
started XP and W2K installs, I first had to disable L1/L2
cache which of course is really slow, and after reboot re-
enabled it - still crashed. Resetting the mobo's bus speed
corrected the problem.
