slow network

i have a computer running xp pro with a
marvel 88e 80 50 pci-e asf
gigabit ethenet card
connected via a cat5E cable to a
surecom 10/100m ethenet mini switch
the other computer runs xp home edition
via a intel pro/100ve network card and cat5e cable to the mini switch
the network is very slow how could i speed it up

How slow is slow - have you measured network throughput? What symptoms are
you seeing, under what conditions?

Are there any other devices connected besides the two PCs and the switch?
