slow network

I've got a Windows 2000 Pro laptop connected to a simple
network with other windows machines running Win 98 and ME.
they shares a DSL connection through a web router and
recently the win2k machine has created web access for all
other machines to slow down, immensely.

If the win2k machine is disconnected from the network, it
slows down to an almost unusable speed. I've noticed that
CPU usage is always at 100%.

Any ideas for solutions??

Mhalmi,

You may have acquired some adware or spyware, which both eat up resources
like crazy.

Try closing all ports and then see which programs give you error messages.
You may be surprised. Also there are utilities from Symantec and McAfee to
help stop unauthorized internet use. Also take a look at your uninstall
software screen to see if there are obvious culprits there.
