My system as a whole is running normally -- not slow. I recently
defragmented the disk. I deleted all temporary Internet files. I run Norton
Anti-Virus and keep the virus definitions updated.

This is happening in all my programs. When I select Open and try to move up
or down in the directory tree, the system takes 1-2 minutes to respond. It
also happened when I clicked on My Computer - took about 5 minutes to respond
with the list of hardware.

When it happens in WordPerfect 12, the system responds with a message that
another program is using "it", and prompts me to switch to this other program
to stop it. This even happens when no other programs are open.

I've tried various Windows diagnostic tools to identify what programs are
running in background, but they're identified by obscure file names that
don't mean anything to me.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Try Googling the 'obscure file names' - in double quotes - like this -

"jusched.exe"

Your delay problems could be anything from a bad CD-ROM drive to a virus
or possibly a failing hard drive. Have you tried running any online
virus scanners? Try Googling: "online virus scan"
Have you tried running "Spybot Search & Destroy"?
Have you tried running "AdAware SE Personal"?

Good luck
