Computer very slow and often unresponsive

My computer is runny very slow. When signing online it takes forever...and
often get message that it is not responding. When typing I have to wait for
it to catch up. It sounds like it is running constantly, like it is always
thinking. I have defraged, disk cleanup. Cleaned up unwanted programs in
control panel. Removed startup items not needed and it still is slow. Help!
It is only two years old and I have current virus software McAffee and run
MSN on the net. Any help would be appreaciated.

You need to find the specific process or application that's taking all
the CPU resources and slowing down your PC.

To do this try Process Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and 'Show Lower
Pane' options.
(This will provide the detailed info you need)
Next click on the CPU column to sort processes by %CPU usage.
Then click on the process that's using most or all the CPU %,
once it's highlighted, right click and from the options listed select:
Search Online
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

Note: some entries like Explorer and svchost may need to be expanded to show
the detail,
(sub processes), in this case click on the + located to the left of the
entry.

Still another tool is What's Running

I once had the same problem, but, nothing unusual was ever found. Still ran
very very slowly even after format and reinstall. I changed the hard drive
and then all was well. Just saying my experience

What is the make and model of your PC? How much RAM do you have
installed? How large is your hard drive, and how much free space do you
have on it? Have you scanned for spyware?

Have you tried running in Safe Mode?

HP w/pentium 4 processor, 512 mb memory, 200gb hard drive with 87 % free
space. My virus program scans nightly and removes crap. It actually seams to
be running better the last few days. I will keep a eye on it. Thanks.

You indicated you check for viruses, but you didn't mention anything
about spyware scans. Which specific McAfee program do you use for
anti-virus? And which specific program checks for spyware?

And what model is your HP?
