Slow media play

please help if you can! About a month ago any video or music started to play
a little slowly, whether a CD, DVD or downloaded, so it is not the disc
drive. I have tried to upgrade to a new version of media player (which
worked, but still slow), I have tried to manually change the speed settings
and I have tried to return the PC to a previous "optimum" setting. None of
this has worked. Nelly Furtado sounds like Paul Robeson.

what do you have tools>options>performance set to for speed? auto detect
or manual ?
