Slow mail sending

Hi,for quite a while now I am experiencing very slow mail uploads.The progress bar window simply creeps and can take several minutes to send a mail of 3Mb size.Sometimes I get the error message 'the SMPT server is not responding'Sometimes I get the 'Wait' prompt for another 60 seconds worth of creep!I am using VistaSP1 and IE8, swiching to Firefox does not help.~~~AIG
