slow login

Hi

My Win XP just got updated with SP2, and it's on LAN connecting to Windows
Server 2003. The logon is slow. The logon seems to wait at "Applying
Computer Settings". The wait is about 1 minute 15 seconds. If I see the
logon screen and do not logon immediately (for example, wait for a minute or
two), then I won't have the slow "Applying Computer Settings". So, either I
wait before I log in or I wait after login ... the wait has to be there.

I don't think we have this problem before SP2. Also, other PCs running on
Win XP SP1 do not have this slow wait.

Please let me know how I solve this.

Thanks
Steve

Check the slow machine's IP address, [cmd window, ipconfig/all] but

Usually the slowdown in 'Applying Computer Settings' is due to Group
Policies' being processed. Do you have complex or multiple security
policies? SP2 has slightly more policy options it can process. FWIW - The
policies I'm referring to will likely be 'computer/system' policies and not
'user' policy settings. How about roaming profiles? Are you using any of
these? Are there any errors in Event Viewer that offer clues?

If there are no policies (or minimal policies) being processed, verify DNS
operations as this is sometimes a source for slowdowns with XP clients.
Primary DNS should be the Win2003 server.

You may also want to enable verbose userenv logging which will create a
logfile during the logon process which can be examined. Checkout Microsoft's
KB article # 221833 for more info.

Cheers!

ok thanks...I'll post in SBS.

Below is what I got from ipconfig/all. The DNS ip (192.168.20.50) is our
Windows 2003 server's IP.

Good news...

Thank you for mentioning the Event Viewer. I checked and there was an Event
ID 7022 in System Event ("The OfficeScanNT Personal Firewall service hung on
starting."). I supposed this is some firewall module in the virus software
wasn't working properly.

So, I uninstalled the virus software (TrendMicro), and the problem went
away immediately. To be sure that the virus software was the cause of the
problem, I rebooted and went through the login a few times, and the login
indeed went smoothly and quickly without the virus software.

I then reinstalled the virus software, and the login continued to work
smoothly. I checked the Event Viewer again, and there is no more Event ID
7022. Now it takes only 5 seconds to get past the Applying Computer
Settings message.

Thank you again for help with solving this mystery.
