I have inertnet connection but it is only at 36mbps. The other laptop
(sitting side by side) shows the 54mbps.
Why am I getting this error? and why is my connection slower??

Not enough information here to tell you what to look for. I am assuming from your speeds you
stated that you are using a modem dual-up connection.

Assumptions:
1. Both laptops are clean installs of Windowx XP (on clean hard drives - not upgrades)
2. That both laptops have the same modem installed
3. That both laptops have the same version of antivirus installed and configured exactly the
same.
4. That both laptops have the exact same hardware installed -CPU, RAM, disk size and rpms,
etc.
5. That both laptops are using the same verison of all drivers and the same
software/configuration on both.
6. That both laptops are not connected to the ISP at the same time.

If any of the above assumptions are not "true" then we are not comparing apples to apples
and the systems will behave differently.

If the above are all "true" then check for:
1. Antivirus dat file and engine dates plus configurations to make sure they are EXACTLY the
same, such as scaning network drives or not).
2. Boot both into Safe Mode with Networking and restest.
3. Be sure the modem make/model/drivers are exactly the same. If not, then the through put
will vary. And sometimes the through put will vary per connection. So one time the modem
may connect at this speed and the same device making another connection to the same ISP
will connect at a different speed. So you have to test this over a period of time and when
maiing different connections.
4. Be sure the path of the connections is the same - such as same number being called.

There are going to be variences in connection speeds on any connection. There are a lot of
factors that play into that. Trying to get one to match exactly another system is not something
that can easily be done, if at all unless both machines are assembled at the same time from
the same manufacturer using the same parts.

Gary

I actually have a wireless dsl network.
Brand new laptops, so yes, clean copy of XP, and a downloaded and updated
often brand new version of Norton Anti Virus and Firewall. I also run XPSOFT
spy ware on both computers daily.

I'm more concerned why when I run the network diagonstic I get the below
information basically saying the the "Broadband 54g Max performance 802.11g"
fails the test. I don't understand...if that isn't working then I shouldn't
have internet access on this laptop....right???
I'm really confused now.
Can you help please??
