Network only working one way?

K

Kenny

PC 1, XP Pro/SP3 hard wired to 3Com wireless modem/router.
PC 2, XP Home/SP3 wirelessly connected to same.
Have run Network Setup Wizard on both, also enabled "Share this folder on
the network" on the folders I want to share.
Have Zone Alarm Free, Windows firewall turned off, on both PC's and have set
up a "Trusted Zone" on each with an IP range of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.5.
PC 1 can see the shared folders on PC 2 but not the other way round.
From PC 2 I can "see" PC1 but not the shared folders on it. If I try to
open PC 1 from PC 2 I get error message:
"MSHOME
PC 1 is not accessible. Uou might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions."
From Command prompt I can ping each one from the other.

Running the troubleshooter in Windows Help I get for PC 1:
"Default Outlook Express Mail

I don't know why it shows connection to as FAILED on PC 2
because I can access it no problem.
Sorry if this is a bit long winded but I would like to get this working and
would appreciate any help.

PC 1, XP Pro/SP3 hard wired to 3Com wireless modem/router.
PC 2, XP Home/SP3 wirelessly connected to same.
Have run Network Setup Wizard on both, also enabled "Share this
folder on the network" on the folders I want to share.
Have Zone Alarm Free, Windows firewall turned off, on both PC's
and have set up a "Trusted Zone" on each with an IP range of
192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.5. PC 1 can see the shared folders on PC
2 but not the other way round. From PC 2 I can "see" PC1 but not
the shared folders on it. If I try to open PC 1 from PC 2 I get
error message: "MSHOME
PC 1 is not accessible. Uou might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions."
From Command prompt I can ping each one from the other.

It would help to know if Simple File Sharing is enabled or not. On
the XP Home machine, Simple File Sharing is enforced. On the XP Pro
machine, you can use either enable or disable Simple File Sharing.
To determine if enabled, double click on any folder and then:
Tools->Folder Options -> View
Simple File Sharing is the last checkbox.

If Simple file Sharing is enabled, then file access is through the
Guest account. Make sure the Guest account is active. If Simple
File Sharing is disabled, then you must authenticate using
username/password.

The following articles may also help:

"You cannot access shared files and folders or browse computers in
the workgroup with Windows XP"
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318030>

"Error message when you try to access a Windows XP-based network
computer: "You might not have permission to use this network
resource""

Have tried all the suggestions but can't get it to work.
Simple File Sharing is ON on the XP Pro PC, have tried turning it OFF.
Don't understand about the Guest account, it's active on both but if I
switch to it on either or both I can't even access MSHOME.
Thing is I don't even know which PC is causing the problem.

You need to also check the 3Com router. Some routers have a setting
which will block wireless connections from accessing "other"
connections.
