Slow Internet Connection and other problems

On June 13, 2004, I installed Norton Internet Security
Professional 2004 onto my computer, replacing a fairly
basic version of Norton's which had expired on June 1st.

Immediately, I recognized a drop in computer
performance. Programs began running slower and
everything would freeze for a couple seconds every so
often.

I opened taskbar manager and clicked on the performance
tab. Every 30-40 seconds there was a spike in CPU usage
where it would hit 80-100%, even when nothing was open
but the taskbar manager.

I noticed that when I disabled my spyware program,
Webroot's Spysweeper, this problem no longer existed. It
seemed that this new version of Norton's and Spysweeper
weren't compatible. It wouldn't let Spysweeper download
new spyware definitions.

I know that I can disable Norton's to download the
definitions but it seems like both programs should be
able to coexist.

Though I preferred to have both programs running, I
decided that I would disable Spysweeper everyday that I
wasn't going to run a system scan for spyware. This
allowed my computer to return to something close to
normal.

I contacted both Norton and Webroot to ask about a
potential conflict but got no reply from either. Norton
required a payment for assistance and a free
troubleshooter, the latter of which was not helpful.

In addition to the problems I was having with Norton's
and Spysweeper, I wasn't always able to turn my computer
off. Sometimes it would look like it was shutting down
and then freeze on the wallpaper. No matter how long I
waited, it wouldn't close.

Even when the computer would turn off, some processes
wouldn't respond and had to be closed by pressing 'end
now' when the error message came up. The process
hpcmpmgr.exe is one that always has to be ended
manually. I thought this might be a problem with Windows
and Norton's, since it had never done this before
Norton's, so I thought Windows might have an update for a
problem like this.

I had not downloaded many of the Microsoft patches, so on
July 3, 2004 I decided to update my system by installing
the needed patches. I downloaded them in bunches, since
downloading everything would take a really long time
using dialup.

The last bunch that I downloaded appeared to have a
negative effect on my computer. I tried to get onto the
Internet but it seemed to take an extra long time
verifying my password. It allowed me through but I
couldn't access any sites. It kept coming up, 'Cannot
find Server' or 'The page cannot be displayed.'

Other times, I can't log on at all, receiving an error
report that reads, "Error 619: A connection to the remote
computer could not be established, so the port used for
this connection was closed. For further existence, click
More Info or search Help and Support Center for this"

It doesn't finish the sentence and there's nowhere on the
dialogue box that gives me the option of more info.

Since I had been able to access sites on the Internet
until I downloaded the last group of patches, I assumed
that it was that last bunch that was causing the
problem. On July 4, 2004, I went into Window's Explorer
to the Windows folder and found several subfolders with
names like $NtUninstallKB823559$. I went through each
folder to find which ones were modified between 5 and 8pm
on July 3, 2004, since that was the range in which I
believed the problem had occurred. I began uninstalling
these programs.

After I was done, I was able to access the Internet and
maneuver various sites. However, it still took longer
than I usual to verify the password and page loading and
downloading was a bit slower than I was used to.
Sometimes the computer still couldn't find the server but
for the most part, the computer was functioning.

On July 7, 2004, I went back onto Microsoft's update page
and tried again to download the patches. Everything was
downloaded but nothing changed. What works, still works
and what doesn't work, still doesn't.

On July 13, 2004, I received a warning in the lower right
hand panel of the screen that warned of low virtual
memory. I had no programs up and saw nothing in the
taskbar manager that seemed out of the ordinary. The
computer wasn't running any slower than it had been
running either.

To sum up, the problems I have with my computer are the
following:

Post Norton's installation, pre Windows updates:

The computer will not always shut down
When it does shut down, certain processes won't respond
and must be closed manually
The process hpcmpmgr.exe never responds upon shutdown
The computer's CPU usage spikes when Spysweeper is running
This causes the computer to freeze about every 30 seconds
Spysweeper can't update itself through Norton's firewall

Post Windows updates:

It takes longer for my Internet company to verify my
password
I can't always access the Internet
Sometimes I get messages like 'Cannot find server'
or 'The page cannot be displayed'
Recently, I received a warning about being low on virtual
memory

Any help that anyone could provide regarding these issues
would be greatly appreciated. If this information isn't
enough or if I could provide extra details that would be
needed to make an accurate diagnosis, please let me know.

Again, thank you for your time in reading this and for
whatever help you could provide.

Sincerely,

DJ Wright

Lots of problems. I'm not going to lecture about NAV. OK, it *is* a big
resource hog. 'Nuff said. :)

Too many issues to deal with in one post. But I'll say that there is a
chance you have some Malware which is using up resources. The chances are
good, inasmuch as NAV and SpySweeper will not possibly detect everything
that can be present.
