Slow DVD performance

Every 15 secs movies get slightly frozen. No virus, no spyware, 1 GB of RAM,
plenty of hard disk. I solved this by disabling the wireless card in the
past (other notebook). Does not work now. Any suggestions?
 
What else is running in the background? Could be almost anything including
antivirus, spyware blockers, screensavers etc etc.
