slow download

I have pages on my site that take 100 seconds to download, at least that
what the REPORT says and it also says it on the bottom of the pages when I
working in front page (2002).
Since I just had a table with a few rows and 2 photos 1/2 the size that they
were initially, (I compressed them) it doesn't seem like it's so much stuff
to have such a long download.
Could someone PLEASE help me understand why my site has about 95% slow
pages!!!
I don't know how to reduce my photos anymore so that they still look good.
Are my photos to large after compressing or does that not do a thing??
Help...please.

It must be your Photos what file format are they in? (should be jpg for
Photos)
An URL would help.

Regards Jens Peter Karlsen. Microsoft MVP - Frontpage.

A page, together with all its images, CSS sheets, external JavaScript files
etc. should not exceed about 60KB. This will give a download time of about
20 seconds using a 33Kbs modem.
FrontPage tends to overestimate the download time for a page, especially
when some images are used multiple times in the page. The time shown when
editing the page seems to be more accurate than the time in the reports.

I'm really not sure how others are viewing it and if it's actually really
slow for them .
I'm going off of my report which you pointed out could be wrong.
HoweverI'd love for someone with knowledge to take a peek and help me tweek
this site but I'm not really comfortable posting the url here.
Any other way to get that to someone who really cares.
I'd actually really love the crtic...I can take it!

When I compress photos for a web site, shouldn't that be reducing it
specifically for a web site viewer.
It shouldn't require more tweeking or should it. I use the compress photo
for web button.
And like I said, 100 seconds to download 2 compressed photos and 3 lines of
text seems odd.

Which 'compress photo for web button'?

Whatever you're using to compress/optimize photos should give you a compression percentage choice and some preview type screen. Try 75% see what it looks like, and what the file size is.

It'd be easier to tell ya if you post the URL of the site.

When I open my web site and edit with front page I go to picture properties
and use the edit button that opens my photo and gives me cjoices to compress
for a web page or a email or not to compress at all.
When i compress the photos I see the file size reduces greatly but I don't
recall the size it said.
I'll have to look it up.
But I do appreciate the response from all.
I'm new to this and not sure how to leave arate but will figure it out when
I have more time to read through the info.
my site is www.bonsainorthshore.com
I'm getting ready to redo it and want to do a better job next time.

If you want the site to load fast, make all those photos thumbnails linked to
the actual photo. You can adjust the size of the thumbnail large enough that
the viewer can see what it is and know if they want to view the actual photo.
Look at this page and see what I'm talking about. With 4 photos and logo it
downloads in 15 seconds or so.

AH....

1- What program is opening up to edit your images?
2- That main image is still 74k or better you can compress that more than that and still have a nice shot.

BUt... dollars-to-donuts, that's not your problem:

All your nav buttons on the right side are Java Hover buttons, which require JVM (Java Virtual Machine) to be installed on users machines. These days most new machines do not come with Java installed and the user will have to download & install JVM from Sun to even see them. I have JVM installed and even still it took a while for the index page to load.

While you are remodeling your site, remove all spaces (%20) from file and folder names

Sounds like great advice. Awesome, I'll do it.
I have no idea why those % appear in the first place.
How do I view it to remove all%?? Erase HTMl?

You take out the spaces in the filenames, and replace them with a character
such as an underbar _ or hyphen - , or just make it one long word.
For example, instead of: this is my page.htm you make it this_is_my_page.htm
or thisismypage.htm

This isn't working out for me.
It appears the auto HTML writer puts dashes in spaces???
I'm probably not looking for it in the right place.
I'm feeling really inadequate right now.
I couldn't use that space remover I tried to download either, nothinhg.
Thsi isn't good. I'm not getting anywhere.
I'd like to see one page go from slow to f

I use several of Jim's addins but have not used the space remover - soory.

Just attack your index page manually for now..rename stuff without the spaces, then recalculate etc...

You'll still have to deal with the Hover buttons though.

Try the site again, please.
i removed the hover buttons but my report still says it's 40 seconds and
i've compressed photos in othert pages that didn't change the speed any still
at 100.
Can't fiqure out how to rename stuff or spaces the html doesn't appear to
have spaces in the file names that appear where I can see them.
I'm still not getting it,
Anyway , could you let me know if oyu tried to download my site and if it
seemed slow or not.

loaded faster but probably because you dumped the java.
the image is still 70K in size. What are you using to Optimize your images - this one is still too big.

I didn't try all the links but View Nursery loads incredibly slow, at first I thought it was the images...until the Java buttons revealed themselves at the bottom of the page. Kill the Java :-)

The spaces will display in file/page/image names as: %20 you can see the Directions To Nursery page name is: Nursery%20new.htm

and the top photo of View Nursery is:

http://www.bonsainorthshore.com/nursery w stands.jpg

But the spaces are not the big issue at the moment although I think you should clean them all up...I think your main issue is the Java.

| Try the site again, please.

I use Microsoft picture manager.
I resized the photo to be a small web photo and then compressed it.
Ididn't se the time change any at east not on the bottom of the screen when
I had it opened to edit in front page,
I did remove the Java on the view nurs. page as well but also didn't notice
any time change.
I'm going to go through the photos again later and try to reduce them a bit
or split them up and have several pages.
Thanks again

Hmmm..I dunno MS Picture Manager I use other programs

Index - much faster (no Java)
View Nursery - much faster (no Java)
Directions to Nursery - slow as molasses in the winter (Java Buttons)

That time thing on the bottom of FP page is not real accurate... I have mine set at 56k but only as an indicator.
