Slow connection of XP machines on NT network

I have been hitting my head against the wall on this
problem. We purchased new XP Professional machines to
connect to our NT network and the connection has been god-
awful slow. I mimicked all the network connections on the
XP's that I have on my Win2000 machine yet the connection
is terribly slow, particularly on start-up when the XP
is "loading personal preferences". We even went as far as
installing additional RAM, to no avail. I tested the
machines without logging on to the network and they run
fine.
What am I missing?
