Slow connecting to network

V

Vince Troia

Hello,

I recently added 2 new Dell Windows 2000 workstation
systems to an existing Windows 2000 network. These 2
systems are connected to a Wireless Router via USB
Wireless NIC's. When I login to the domain, it literally
takes almost 10-13 minutes before I actually see the
desktop. First it says applying your personal settings,
then applying computer settings, etc. Once is it finished,
everything works just fine and also works fast. How can I
speed this up? Are there some settings that I can adjust?
Other information that may help.
I have 4 other Windows 2000 workstation systems connected
to this network via the 4 ports (hard wired) of the
wireless router. 1 of them is the Windows 2000 server,
which is a PDC. Each workstation is setup with an IP and
Subnet. The wireless router is set to use DHCP but since
the workstations are assigned IP's, it doesn't get an IP
from the router. I have given the workstations IP's that
are out of the DHCP range.

Thank you in advance.

Why is w2k/XP running slower while logon 1

When I login into a Windows 2000 active directory from a new xp pro machine
the login in is extremely slow. After logged on, everything works fine. But
other windows versions don't have this problem.
A: This is almost like name resolution issue. Comparing with previous
versions, XP is heavily dependent on DNS to find DC. If the DNS is
configured incorrectly, XP will take longer time waiting for it to timeout
before it tries using NetBIOS. Make sure
1) The DNS setup correct and have the server information.
2) XP clients can find the DNS server.
3) XP machine's DNS server is pointed to your internal DNS server rather
than your ISP's DNS server.
4) Make sure no errors on logon scripts or GPO's that could be causing
the delay.
5) Check any errors on event viewer.
6) Disable NetBIOS on the interfaces that client will not use.
