slow computer

My computer has been acting sluggish. For example when I
open explorer, it takes me three time to click on it to
load, then it loads three windows. My other programs have
been doing the same thing. My CPU usage is constanly 0ver
80% even though nothing is running. I still have over 8
Gs of space left on my drive I have tried everything that
other people have suggested in other posts.
I tried every up to step nine at this address:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm
Everything here:
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/optimizewindowstempfiles.htm

It started to happen just before I downloaded SP 2. I
don't know what to do. I have tried just about everything
that has been sugested on the forums except replacing my
battery or hard drives.

You do not say what is your processor speed and how much RAM memory.

Some other things to look at!

Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup with
Temporary Internet Files, Offline Web Pages (optional), System Restore
( more Options tab )
and Recycle Bin selected for deletion. If you have more than one drive /
partition you may
need to do this operation for each drive / partition. -The remove System
Restore option!

Remove Cookies. Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, General, Delete
Cookies.

Check whether you could reduce the number of days the History of sites
visited is retained. Start,
Control Panel, Internet Options, General, History.

Spyware causes many problems. If not installed download Adaware and / or
update Reference file
from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove
parasites. If Spyware
persists as a problem try a Hosts file.
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/what_is_hosts.html

Slow performance resulting from insufficient memory, causing over
reliance on virtual memory,
may be especially noticed by those upgrading to Windows XP from an
earlier version of Windows.
Windows XP will run with 64 MB of RAM memory. However, a minimum of 256
MB is
recommended and many users will recommend 512 MB. You may check on
pagefile (virtual
memory) usage with Page File Monitor for XP:
http://www.dougknox.com/

Check how much free space you have on the hard drive / partition where
your pagefile is located.
You need a minimum of 15% but 20% or more is better.

Check your setting for the Indexing Service. Start, Administrative
Tools, Services, Indexing
Service. The default setting is Manual. Check that it is not running.

Are there any error messages in Event Viewer? You can access Event
Viewer by selecting Start,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of
the error, information
regarding Event ID: and Source Description is important.

sorry about that, I have an Intel Pentium 4 2Ghz
processor and 512 MBs of RAM. XP came with the computer.
Temporary Internet Files, Offline Web Pages and cookies
have all been cleared by Disk clean-up. I have adware,
updated and scaned my computer. The same has been done
with Norton's.Every thing is clean. Reduced the number of
days the History of sites recorded. I have reduced the
memory commited to system restore because I still use it.
My computer has been saying that my virtual memory was
low. so I increased the size, with Initial size at 1536
MB and Max at 3072 MB. I have 9303 MB Available.Indexing
Service disabled. I still don't really understand Virtual
memory. The computer Manager is sort of outside my
understanding. I can get there, see the errors, but can
not make heads or tails of what they mean. This could be
a misunderstanding, but when I look at the ammount of
errors I have gotten, I have less now than I did before,
but my computer is running slower.

Post copies of any Error Reports in Event Viewer.

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

I did the event viewer thing and found that I had a lot of
system errors like this:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 19/09/2004
Time: 2:52:05 AM
User: N/A
Computer: JACKVANGEMEREN
Description:
The Application Management service terminated with the
following error:
The specified module could not be found.

These errors would appear on every third log for long
lengths of time, with a clump of a dozen or so errors of this:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Dhcp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1002
Date: 19/09/2004
Time: 2:28:26 AM
User: N/A
Computer: JACKVANGEMEREN
Description:
The IP address lease 0.0.0.0 for the Network Card with
network address 00E018E6E7A8 has been denied by the DHCP
server 172.16.0.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

This one talks about addresses and I think it may have to
do with the network I'm on. Before I went away to school I
got my internet from a dial up service. Now I get my
internet from the school Network. As you can tell I don't
really understand the error messsages.

In an earlier post I said my computer was clean, it was at
the time. Adware and Norton said I was clean. The only web
site I have visited is this one. Now I got COOLWEBsearch.
on my IE. For 4 months before last week I would get it
every day.Sometimes I would have to go into safemode to get
rid of it because Norton couldn't delete it. Five days ago
it didn't come back, so I though it was gone for good,
Adware and Norton didn't catch anything.
