1-2 minute delay on startup

I have noticed many other posts and thought I would add
mine for some feedback.

Clean installation of Windows XP. Install SP1.
Computer will reach the desktop and load then hangs for 1-
2 minutes. The hard drive does not respond at all in that
time.

Unable to launch programs during this time.
It will resume the load and finish within 5-10 seconds.

Nothing running in Startup.
No virus or Spyware involved. Something in SP1 mkaes it
hang during startup.

I have also, performed clean installation, installed all
programs including AV, computer will boot normally
multiple times and connect to the internet. Perfect.

Installed SP1 again, computer hangs at boot.

If network cable is plugged in, it will hang. If not
computer will not. No mapped drives.

I have captured SVCHOST trying to connect to
239.255.255.250 Port 1900
&
255.255.255.255 DHCP

I have already checked this and the registry entry is
already correct.

Buster, I've had the same problem and recently discovered that if I unplug my dsl cable, I'll go from 2 minutes to 18 seconds. Come to find out that windows looks for network connections and this can take upwards of a minute

I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy. My homebrew machine was working perfectly, booting up real quick, and all was good. Then, I noticed that animations were no longer playing on internet pages. After looking all over the place to get the animations going again, I falsely assumed that maybe something was wrong in windows (as it turns out, it was Zone Alarm blocking the animations )>. Well, long story short, I reloaded SP1a. Well, that didn't fix the animations, but it did introduce a 1.5 minute delay on startup. I have been able to defeat the startup delay by doing two experimental steps: 1. Unstall the video display adapter in device manager or 2. Go to run, MSconfig, services, and uncheck Symantec Event manager. Both of these steps are nothing anyone wants to do on a permanent basis, but the delay will go away. When I do these steps, xp uses some kind of system vga driver and the video looks as good as it did with the Nvidia drivers. When SEM is not loaded, you cannot start Norton Antivirus at all. So, these fixes are no good for the long term, but may point to another area of interest to investigate for someone smarter than me
I did reinstall windows xp the other day, along with sp1A, and then went to the windows update site and installed all of the critical updates again. The delay is STILL THERE!!
I hope we can figure out what in the heck is causing this delay. It can be lived with, but it was not there before, and it has to do something with re-installing SP1a when it probably should not have been reinstalled

I have the same probleme since I installed the latest Microsoft patches three days ago. I may try to uninstall them and see if the problem disappears. I'll come back.

Does Event Viewer offer any clues as to the cause?

Make a note of the precise text of any error message. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID: and Source Description are important.
