slow boot and slow progs opening

I really am mystified, The length of time it takes for my machine to get
from the windows (the one where the little thing scrolls across the bottom)
to my actual desktop is about 2 minutes. I also have to wait several seconds
before any programs will open after I have clicked to open them. I have an
AMD 2000+xp processor with a 30gb HD and 1gb DDRAM 400mhz so I should be
running like lightening but not at all. Please help me find out why I am not
running at full speed. I do have Norton AV 2004 and ZA Pro running at
startup if this is to blame?

And if you disable NAV and ZA, does the boot speed up?
