Slow Audio in Windows XP

I am experiencing slow audio in Windows XP (SP2). All Windows sounds, MP3s,
video soundtracks and so forth are played at about half-speed.

There are no other performance problems - programs load correctly and
quickly, and there are no apparent device conflicts.

Any ideas how I can overcome this (new) problem?

My thanks in advance.

DW Roberts.
