Sloooooow disk access

J

Upon booting my XPE device, there is a long delay (upwards of a couple
minutes), sometimes a system lock up, when I open My Computer and try to
view files on the disk drive. The delay/lock-up also occurs when I try to
launch an application. If/when the system does recover from the delay, I can
access the drive, but it seems to be a bit slow. There is no problem when
Windows 2000 is running on the same system.

I noticed in my pmq import log that the following message is present:
Warning:Could not find a driver for Generic volume (STORAGE/volume).

My guess is that this message is related to my problem. Any thoughts on this
would be greatly appreciated.

James,

The Generic Volume error is benign and can be overlooked. To begin
troubleshooting the slow startup time can you give us some more information.
(System Speed, Disk Type, etc..)

Also, if you have DHCP enabled make sure there is a DHCP server available on
the network. This can sometimes slow the boot process.

The boot process was just fine. The delay was in trying to view files in the
C: drive using My Computer.

When I ran out of possibilities, I thought I'd start over and create a new
TD XPE configuration using results from ta.exe as opposed to using results
from tap.exe, and then compare the results. To create the initial
configuration, I had used tap.exe on a customer's system that already had
Win2k on it. Being that I did not perform a fresh installation of Win2k on
that system, I was unaware of the history of the system (i.e. if any other
hardware had been installed and then removed from the system, that might
have left behind traces of the hardware that no longer exist, from which
tap.exe could have detected). At any rate, creating a new configuration from
the results of ta.exe instead of tap.exe seemed to fix the problem. My guess
is that somehow tap.exe detected a component, perhaps by reading an old
unused registry entry, that no longer existed in the system. If I had the
time, I would examine the particular differences between the two .pmq files,
but since it worked and my customer was happy, I moved on and took it as
something being wrong with their Win2k o.s. install. It would be interesting
to know exactly what the problem was; maybe I'll have the time someday to
look into it.

Thanks anyway for the feedback!
