Slipstreaming SP-3

Would it be safer to slipstream SP-2 to my XP-Pro gold CD and then
slipstream SP-3 to the CD I just created?

I just did exactly that now.....XP w/SP1 (Gold) slipstreamed in SP2. Then I
took that one with XP w/SP2 and slipstreamed in SP3.
Maybe its over-kill? I read here that you can go directly from XP w/sp1
(Gold) to SP3.

Yes, Gold requires either 1 or 2 put in but not both. Then Sp3.
PS. Just picking apart your wording a bit, I don't think you have to
make cd's between steps. Put Gold on the HD, slipstream it with 1 or 2,
then turn right around and apply sp3.

Correct. Either SP1 or SP2 in the first step and then SP3 for the final is
sufficient, but the long way around is no big deal either.

Just a note on terminology here: XP Gold can also be called XP SP0.
However XP SP1 is not Gold. It is XP Gold integrated with SP1. "Gold"
refers to the first edition of software to be released to manufacturing and
general public availability. There is an "rtm" date and a later "date of
general public availability" which is the starting date for the support
lifecycle.

Yes. Also as Big Al has pointed out you should able to slipstream SP2 to
your XP Pro Gold and hen slipstream SP3 to the resulting file without having
to create intermediate CDs.
