My computer locks up, freezes. I think I want to 'repair' XP home. I see
references to slipstreaming the Windows XP home CD that came with my computer
with the SP2 CD I now have.
I believe extra items are on the Dell Cd that have to be removed before
starting.
Does anyone know the steps required?
Can the 'repair' be done without slipstreaming?
Thank you
Stan

There are no "extra items" found in a
Dell Reinstallation CD.

In theeldergeek.com I got to c:\XP-SP2\i386\update\update.exe -s:c:\xp which
when executed said there were errors: that some or all the files failed to
copy.

files are in c:\XP-SP2\i386 as above.

I am not sure what this command really does or why it failed.

Thanks

Just be aware that slipstreaming will screw up the BIOS-Lock mechanism
for PA, and you will be forced to call up MS and explain why you need to
activation you copy of XP from one of the top twenty OEMs.

This is not true if StanStan uses his Dell CD to create an XP SP2
slipstreamed disk. I've done it successfully for clients' machines many
times. StanStan, a very easy way to make the slipstreamed CD is with
AutoStreamer.

how to use AutoStreamer

It will only take a few minutes.

The instructions I used were specific to SP1a. There is a lot of
discussion about slipstreaming on the Dell forum. I found quite a
bit of discussion but nothing conclusive relative to any other SP or
hotfixes.

I initially slipstream SP2 using my SP1a Dell operating disc and it
did not work. Once I deleted files as instructed on the web page I
mentioned previously, it worked. If you cannot find anthing
conclusive on the Dell forum, you might email Dell and see if you get
any response.

I've done it too, and and then was required to phone activate, when
clean installing off of that new slipstreamed CD.

Naturally if anything were to go wrong with activation it would go wrong
for *you*, Kurt. ;-)

If you are talking about the Windows CD, then you are mistaken. It
contains drivers for the hardware which came with the computer.
