slightly OT Windows XP question

Computer running XP Pro sp3 and all updates... it's been working fine for 8
months then all of a sudden I turn it on and it says it's missing
MMDRIVER.INF and I get no sound. I find the following fix on google:

You're going to need your Windows XP installation CD.
Put the CD in the drive.
Go to Start -> Run and enter cmd.exe in the Open box.
In the command prompt window enter the following:

Expand X:\I386\mmdriver.in_ %windir%\System32\mmdriver.inf

Note: Substitute the correct drive letter for X and leave a space
between _ and %.
Hit the enter key.
Close the command prompt window and see if the file is now where
it should be.

Now I no longer get the warning about a missng INF file but I also still
don't get any audio... I went into device manager and don't see any hardware
problems and get no other error messages at all. Any ideas what else I could
try?

You should post this over at
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support

See if you can find an error viewer account of the failure. Administrative
Tools > Event Viewer. Copy and paste the entire log entry to your post:
Double click the event - press the "two files" symbol button to copy - then
paste into any document or post.
Also include any error messages: verbatim.
