Novice question - Sound card install problem

S

Simon

Hi,

I have just bought a pc running XPe and although the pc
has a sound card, its not working. I get a message stating
that the MMDRIVER.INF could not be found.

In Device Manager, the sound card has a yellow ! and
states that not all the drivers loaded.

I could not find a mmdriver.inf so copied one over from
another machine and this error has now gobne but still no
sound!

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Simon,

I guess "Audio Control Panel" component was not included in the original image on your device.
You could analyze the component dependencies (quite a lot) and see if anything is missing from the image.

Anyway, do you have a way to replace the entire image on the device? If not, you may want to contact original device manufacturer.

Or you can analyze \windows\SetupApi.log file and try to fix step by step (adding missing dlls and reg.entries).

Hi,

The machine came preinstalled with XPe from IBM so I have no cd's images
etc. I guess I will need to contact IBM for a cd.

Where can I find the DLL's if I don't have another image or recovery cd? Are
these files the same as vanilla XP?

Simon

Hi Simon,

XPe and XP Pro use same binaries so you can copy files from XP Pro. Just make sure that service pack and path level is in the same
category.
Also there might be registry entries missing that you will have to fill with regedit.

the sound working?

Regards,

Simon.

Without the XPe tools it will be a very hard task :-(
But you might try using tools like regmon and filemon from systeminternal.
Analyzing setupapi.log can help also.

Hi again,

Having spoken to IBM it seems they do not preinstall XPe so I cant rebuild
the machine again with XPe (despite it being licensed). Would Microsoft be
able to provide a standard image if i supply proof of license?

Hi Simon,

Unfortunately there is no such thing as standard image :-( (yet)
There are XP Embedded tools that we developers use to create custom XP based OS-es for our customers/products.

Unless you want to become deeply involved in XPe development there is no help for you.
If you are interested in XPe tools you can download evaluation version from MS site for free. Please let us know if you need more
info.

Slobodan
