Slightly OT: Lycos Popup

G

George W.

When I do a search from Google or Yahoo a second window pops up
showing search results from Lycos for the same item. I can't seem to
prevent this. I don't have any of the Lycos sidesearch software
installed and never use their search engine. Is this in anyway related
to adware/spyware? Any suggestions? If I go to Lycos.com my location,
zipcode and timezone is displayed in the IE address bar. I routinely
run Spybot, Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster, all updated. I also run JV16
Powertools registry cleaner.

Thanks.

it is almost certainly some kind of adware or spyware... however if
spybot and adaware aren't finding it i don't know what to suggest
(other than wait for someone willing to suggest hijack this)...

maybe check to see if there are any suspicious processes running...

Hijack this was suggested in another group, and I downloaded it and
ran it. It's pretty hard to tell the good from the bad. Turning off
active scripting in IE solves the problem but stops it on all other
sites too unless you add them as a trusted site. Kind of a pain. I'm
currently trying out the free version of 12 Ghosts Popup Stopper and
that works too. Pretty well, actually, and it's easy to bypass as
needed.

Thanks.

you're generally not supposed to be able to tell by yourself unless
you're technically inclined... the reason i'm not going to suggest it
myself is because i'm not familiar enough with it to tell you what's
good and what isn't... there should be a web forum for posting the log
file it generates, though, and then hijack this experts in that forum
will supposedly be able to tell you what you need to do to get rid of
the problem... there probably should have been some mention of this
forum on the site you downloaded hijack this from...

??!!

the internet zone should be locked down tight... sites you trust should
go in the trusted sites zone so that some sites have permission to do
things that you wouldn't want to let some strange site you know nothing
about do... this is pretty basic in the IE security paradigm... if you
haven't already been doing this then you haven't been practicing safe
hex...

if all you want is a popup stopper then i hear the google toolbar works
well... though personally i don't bother as i use a browser (mozilla)
that has popup blocking built in...

however, if you're getting a lycos search popup when you try to search
google there is still a problem of malware on your system - there is no
script on the google site to bring up search pages from other
organizations...
