slides with images - screen vs. print?!

I've created some images in Photoshop

have found that png and gif work past as inserted images on powerpoint

my powepoint slide has a gif image as a background

some images are cutout (mostly elipical in shape) and have a "feathered"
border

Only the png's insert well in powerpoint - the gif's have a "hard" edge --
although the png's look ok on the pc monitor / projector - they develop the
same hard edge as the gif image slides when printed.

why the problem when printing?

GIFs only support a simple on/off, show it or don't show it type of
transparency and that's all PPT seems able to print as well.

PNGs support a full 256 levels of transparency but PPT can display them on
screen only, not print them.

Sometimes you can get round this by copying the PNG and everything beneath it,
then Edit,Paste Special, AS PNG back into PPT. In other words, convert the PNG
and all beneath it into a single bitmap.
