Slide Design options do not appear - why?

Guest

When I use Microsoft Office Powerpoint and I want to change my slide design
and/or layout I call up the task pane (on right hand side of screen) but the
layout and design options don't show - only the boxes where the different
designs/layouts are placed are highlighted - but the actualy details inside
the box do not appear...what can I do to recitfy this problem?

This question keeps popping up here, but I don't think we've resolved it
yet. So some basic troubleshooting is in store for starters -- and if you're
willing to keep digging, maybe we can eventually figure this one out.

So.
Which version of Office? (Assuming XP or 2003 because of the task pane, of
course. Go to Help|About to tell which version for sure.)
Which Office service packs have been installed? (Again, Help|About will tell
us.)
Which version of Windows?
What service packs have been installed on Windows? (Right-click on My
Computer and choose Propreties.)
Is this a stand-alone computer, or is it on a network?
If you log on as admin on the computer, do the design and layout thumbnails
show?
If you go to Start|Run, type in msconfig and disable your virus scan program
at startup and then reboot, do the design and layout thumbnails still not
show?
Do you have any PPT add-ins installed? If you disable them all and restart
PPT, do the design and layout thumbnails show? See How to disable add-ins
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00324.htm for info on disabling add-ins.

I'm having the same problem. Using "Detect and Repair" fixed the problem
yesterday, but it came back today and repair no longer works. After I did
the repair yesterday, I installed Office SP2, but the problem did not
reappear until this morning.

Office 2003 SP2 on Windows XP Home SP2
Standalone installation
Admin doesn't make a difference.
No Powerpoint addins.

Thanks, MJJ. Did you reboot after applying SP2?

If not, did you shut down your machine last night and then start it up again
this morning? (I'm trying to figure out if the problem came back after you
booted the computer. That might indicate that something that gets loaded
when the computer starts is affecting the thumbnails.)

Can you try the following?
If you go to Start|Run, type in msconfig and disable your virus scan program
at startup and then reboot, do the design and layout thumbnails still not
show?

Hi All,

It appears I'm having a similar issue - only for me it's the Animation
Schemes task pane...all the choices are there, but they're "greyed out".
This is only happening with one user account on the PC - other user accounts
can see (and select) any of the available choices under this task pane. I
disabled Norton AV auto protect but still the problem persists. Both user
IDs appear to have the same programs running in the background.
System specs:
Windows XP Service Pack 2
Office (Powerpoint) 2002 (no service pack)

Patrick.

Hm. If your "problem user" (well, we know it's not really the user, but you
know what I mean!) starts a new, blank presentation file, are the animation
schemes selectable then?

So your user can see the animation schemes listed, but they're not
selectable, right? Greyed out. Hm. That's a little different, but I suppose
it could be related to the missing slide design and layout thumbnails. Do
your problem user's slide designs and layout thumbnails show up? And, hey,
you guys with the missing slide design and layout thumbnails -- what about
the animation schemes? Can you see those? Can you select 'em?

And the other user account on the same PC isn't having any issues. Hm.
Interesting. Very interesting. What are you using to determine they're
running the same programs? (Not trying to say you're wrong, just curious
what you're looking at.)

Steve Rindsberg and I are working on an FAQ for this. It's really
disorganized and ugly right now, but I think you should at least hit the
link in there for "what add-ins are loaded" and run the macro to check for
PPT add-ins. http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00779.htm
