Since I recently reinstalled XP, I have some annoyingly odd issue

Since I reinstalled windows XP recently, I have noticed some odd issues. For
starters when I right click on a menu it ghost images and disappears as soon
as I remove my finger . I have to click it several times before the menu
stays visible. Also If I go back into something to correct a typo I place
the cursor in the right spot, when I click it it highlights the whole word
instead of just marking the spot with a cursor line. If i click it again it
highlights the whole line. If I click again it either highlights the whole
body of what I'm typing. The click after that gives me what I wanted a spot
where the cursor can either add a letter or do what I want. these problems
occur in all programs( outlook , word, etc ). Final issue for now- When I am
in outlook express checking mail 3 things. First When I click on the local
folders so I can click on send and receive it collapses the list of 'in, out,
sent, etc" like I had clicked the little box with "plus or minus" next to the
local folders title. Second- When I click on a new mail it automatically
opens it and then it opens it also in another small window.I have it set not
to do that unless I double click on it. And last - When I check mail after it
checks it disconnects my ISP link and knocks me of line. The little box in
tools is unchecked not to do that. This happens intermittently. I have gone
to tools, connections tab and made sure the box marked " Hang up after
sending and receiving " is unchecked. These proplems may seem trivial but none
the less they are real annoying. It's a Conundrum to me. If any one can solve
these mysteries I'm listening.

After you did the clean install, did you then install all the drivers for
your hardware? It sounds as though you didn't.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

Don't know about your OE problem, but you might want to use a known good
mouse to solve the others.

Did you do a Repair Install or a format & clean install?

What problems were you having that you thought a "reinstall" would resolve?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

I completely un- and reinstalled XP. I had registry key damage that was
causing proper functioning of some things, nothing to do with the problems
I'm having now. Never had Norton or McAffee ever, Using Avast! anti Virus Not
using an anti spy ware per say Have Malwarebyte' Anti-malware, and Dr web

What "registry key damage," what wasn't functioning properly, and what
caused the problem?

I was using a registry cleaner and could not update Microsoft stuff I could
download software but couldn't install it. Kept saying I wasn;t connected. It
seems al ot is hard to remember but it was covered in one of the threads i
had I don't know if you can access them or not I don't know how this all
works but if you can it's all in there.

That, right there, is a GREAT example of why registry cleaners are a BAD
THING!

Backup your personal data, then format your hard-drive & do a clean install
of Windows. Please note that another Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade)
will NOT fix your problems!

cf. http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

5 steps to help protect your new computer before you go online
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/advanced/xppc.mspx

PS: If you think your Registry needs to be "cleaned" or "repaired" and you
need more convincing, read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw
your own conclusions.

Two things:

You don't know if there's a causal relationship between the two.

There are registry cleaners and then there are registry cleaners.

Here is the problem with reinstalling windows I installed it and registered
it My old computer died so I had to buy a new one. When I went to reinstall
it ( this one I'm currently using now) It told me I couldn't re-register it
because it was already registered. It took me weeks of talking to customer
service and getting the royal runaround to try and get to someone to issue me
a case # just so I could talk with someone in tech support to explain what
the situation was. I finally talked to someone in tech support and I got it
squared away. I'm afraid if I do it again they will not let me register it
this time and I will be screwed. Have you got any idea how I can do this
without them rendering this version I paid for inoperable?

If it's been over 120 days since your last install/hardware upgrade, it
should activate on line. Activation is required. Registration is not.

A brand-new one or a new-for-you one?

You can't use the CD that came with our old, dead computer to reinstall
WinXP on the new one but it sounds like you somehow convinced MS to let you
do so.
