If you want to create a bootable CD with the XP Recovery Console on it which
can access your hard-drive with a DOS-like environment with several commands
for repairing and formatting installations. This is what you do. First
download the file rc.iso by right-clicking on this link:

http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso

and selecting "Save Target As...", then simply burn a disk from it. This
will then be a bootable CD with a copy of the XP Recovery Console on it.

For a full list of Recovery Console commands and their uses, you will find
them by typing Recovery Console into the Windows XP Help Centre.

I have created a disk from your link (thanks!) and am trying to start an HP laptop with it and find out what's wrong with the hard drive. I get stuck at the Administrator Password step: this is my home PC, and I don't believe there's ever been an administrator password set up!

I appreciate any ideas!

Thanks,

Your phrase "an administrator password [has never been] set up" does not
agree with the facts. Every account, without exception, has a password, even
if it is only a blank password. It does not "need to be set up". A more
appropriate expression might be "the administrator's password has never been
recorded". To reset it to a blank, type something like "forgot my windows
password" into a Google search box. You'll probably get more than a million
hits - it is a VFAQ. Alternatively, get a boot diskette/CD from here:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html.

Thanks for the response... your post reminded me that I had installed a HDD from another laptop - from my old work PC - and I was able to get the password from the IT guy (the original HP HDD is dead). I got in and verified that the drive is OK using the DOS commands. I'll buy a new HDD for the HP and start over!

Thanks again.

If you mean the password for the Administrator account has never been
*changed*, then it's still blank. Just hit ENTER!

(And in your next reply, please be careful where you place the cursor.
You might need to start a new line.)

Hi Dwells,
Sorry to hear you have had some trouble! Yes, what Daave
wrote is quite true, if there has been no Admin password set, try just
hitting on the [ENTER] key when asked for the password. If this is not
accepted:- I assume it's your computer, an as such - you have Admin rights.
This being the case, you will have to go into the 'Local Users and Groups'
item on the 'Administrator's Tools' part of the start menu. Change the
password by right-clicking on Administrator and choosing 'Set Password'.
You can either change it to something you know or delete it completely.
Hope you get by this problem.
