Simple File Sharing

I have a shared MDB file which could be connected to perfectly well from
another machine on Workgroup. I then do a compact and repair and other
machine can no longer connect. Message comes up that host machine has
exclusive use (which it does not).
I then copy the mdb file to another file and the problem clears itself. Is
this "an undocumented feature"? Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Is everyone else out of the database when you compact & repair? Do you
close it down properly before they try to get back in?

Yes, All Users were out of database and Access was closed down.
