Signup Without Hotmail or MSN email

Is it possible to use Messenger without having an Hotmail or MSN
account? I meet up with a couple of friends on Messenger at the
weekend for online gaming.

Another friend is interested in joining us, so I have explained how we
meet up. The problem is he doesn't have a Hotmail account. Does this
matter, will any old email account do, or will he need to sign-up for
a Hotmail one?

No, MSN and Hotmail.com accounts are not required, all that's required is that your friend
register his current e-mail as a .NET Passport:
