Signon no longer appears on Welcome screen

Shortly after installing SP2 (the problem may not be related) I noticed that
when I start up I no longer get a request to select an account on the Welcome
screen. What happened?

I do believe I've read about this. I think a possible fix is to go to
control panel>user accounts>change the way users log on and at that point
select "use welcome screen"
 
Thanks, however the button to use the Welcome screen was already checked.

Reading about the button's function, it appears that I should be getting a
logon request regardless of whether the button is selected.
