When I tried to sign in to this forum, I didn't see a Sign In icon at the top
(as it mentions in the infomration panel). Why not?
I did click on the "New" and then I was asked for my password, which I
entered, and then was allowed to post this message.
I believe I've seen the Sign In icon at the top in the past, but wonder why
I do not see it today.
Any suggestions/solutions?

This is a newsgroup, not a forum. You are using a web interface to read
a newsgroup.

Instead of frustrating yourself by trying to read a newsgroup through a
web interface, read this newsgroup and all newsgroups the proper way:
with a newsreader. Outlook Express is your newsreader in Windows XP. In
Windows Vista it's Windows Mail.

This isn't a forum; it's a newsgroup. The reason you're having such
problems is that you are using the awful web interface to read this
newsgroup--it's the slowest, clunkiest, most error-prone method there
is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook
Express, which comes with Windows XP, or Windows Mail, which comes
with Vista. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

As far back as I can remember, I have always been able to enter these
Community Boards, with no problems. Why, now, am I having so much trouble
signing-in?
Could it because I installed IE7?

Is there any other "newsreaders" besides the MS ones? A very simple one to
use, etc.?
Thank you.

The web interface is having more than its normal problems at the
moment. No, it is not because you installed IE7.

You will get a far better experience of newsgroups if you use a proper
newsreader instead of that slow and quirky web interface you are
using.

Agent (which I use)

I see that Agent requires payment: $30.

Can anyone recommend a free news reader? I use NetNewsWire on my
Macintosh and it is just superb in that is fast, intuitive, free, and
does not bombard you with adds. In fact, no adds of any sort.

Anything like out there for Windows?

Thanks,
Carl

Outlook Express reads news and comes with Windows. Thunderbird does email
and news and is free.

My recommendation is that, at least as a start, you use Outlook
Express (even though I don't). I recommend it because it's part of
Windows, and you already have it. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm to learn
how to set it up and use it.

Outlook Express is not the best newsreader, but it's not a terrible
one either. Using it will give you experience with a newsreader under
Windows, and let you find out which of its features you like, what you
don't like, and what features you are missing. Once you've had enough
experience with it to know those things, it would be a good idea to
try several of the downloadable newsreaders, whether freeware or
shareware, and see how they meet *your* needs. Although I personally
use and like Agent 5.0, we all have different likes, dislikes and
needs, and I recommend that you don't just go with my recommendation
or anyone else's; try them for yourself, and make your own decision.

When you reply some forums change your posts to include adverts. I am
just thinking about how you might feel about an advert for a Registry
Cleaner attached to your use of the word "web" in your last post <G>. I
can think of other adverts which you might find even more provocative
but this is a public newsgroup and I have no wish to offend anyones'
sensitivities. At least the Microsoft web communities are not presently
doing this.

Thanks, Gerry. I saw your messages about this earlier.

I'm against their attaching *any* advertisements to my messages, but
the message I replied to here was posted to the Microsoft CDO web
site.

I try to remember not to reply to any messages posted on any of the
leeching web site forums, for several reasons: I feel that the owners
of the web sites are doing something that's basically dishonest, and
the messages posted there are often next to impossible to understand.
If they are adding advertisements, then that's a third reason. I may
make an error occasionally, but I try not to reply to them.

Microsoft CDO web site. -how are you readily able to see this? Is it a
feature in Forte Agent?

In Outlook Express as I presently use it takes several clicks to get
this detail.

Hope this helps.

To see that that's how the particular message was posted?

It's in the headers. As far as I know, just about every newsreader
lets you look at the headers. In Agent, it's very easy; you just press
the "H" key.

So, when I do that for your message, I see

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5512

In Outlook Express as I presently use it takes several clicks to get
this detail.

I haven't used Outlook Express for newsgroups in quite a while, but if
I remember correctly, looking at the headers is easy there too; just
press Ctrl-F3.

Ctrl+F3 does not work here. Alt+Enter gives Properties where you see
Name plus displayed email address.

An interesting discovery. No one in the thread posted though the forum.
The original post had this address (e-mail address removed) . The
forum grabbed all messages from elsewhere. I think that this means that
your method of seeking to avoid your posts appearing in this type of
forum does not work.

LOL! You made me start up my laptop, which runs XP and uses Outlook
Express as its newsreader. I verified that I was right, despite my
fear that I was relying on old mistaken memories.

Try it again. I can assure you that Ctrl-F3 will bring up a separate
small window showing the headers for the current message.

No, I didn't say that I was doing anything to avoid my posts appearing
on the Microsoft web site carrying newsgroup messages. My point was
simply that I try to avoid replying to messages that come from the
"leech" forums (not those that come from the Microsoft CDO web site).

And whether it's the Microsoft CDO site or the "leech" forums, I can't
do anything to stop them from including the posts I make.

The Web Interface has been flakey and full of problems since Dec 23 last year. Read
the suggestions from Alan and others below and set up a newsreader

Ctrl+F3 working fine for me! Gives a different window to the Alt+Enter

I have discovered why Ctrl+F3 does not work here. You need to have the
Preview option enabled. I disabled this option years ago for security
reasons. I do not know whether it is still considered an unsafe option
to use.
