Just upgraded to Win XP Pro from Win 98. When I go to
the start menu and tell the program to shut down it comes
back with "It's now safe to turn off your computer".
What do I need to do to have Windows turn off
automatically?

Hey Jd,

If you get the message "It's now safe to turn off your computer" it's safe.
This means Windows Xp has fully shutdown, so don't worry you can just unplug
the pc.

This is a function of the bios and motherboard that is called "soft
off." I have heard strange things about xp not "waiting long enough"
for a response from the bios during the initial install concerning
whether or not that function is supported. Since it does not get an
answer it defaults to the safer of the two choices which is unsupported.

You can try reinstalling xp and hitting f6 when the option for hitting
f5 to add new components comes up. There might be a way of fixing it
from there, not sure though.
