Shutting down errors

When I restart or shut down XP I invariably get a series of dialogue boxes
about applications that are "shutting down". A fair chunk of them are shown
as "not responding. I have to manually "end now" to get the computer to shut
down. There is no predicting what causes it. Sometimes I don't launch any
applications or go onto the internet - but I still get it! Two regular
offenders are "ccApp" and "#gen_windows# indexing status". I notice that the
task manager regularly shows WindowsSearchIndexer.exe running at 99% CPU
usage and all other applications at 0%. My knowledge is fairly limited but
that doesn't seems right. Any clues as to how I can get rid of these boxes
and shut down normally?

ccapp.exe is a process belonging to Norton AntiVirus. It is responsible for
the auto-protect and email checking facilities, both of which will not
function correctly if this service is stopped. This program is important for
the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Note: ccapp.exe is also a process belonging to the media.fastclick adware
which creates advertising popups on your computer and sends Internet usage
information back to it's company's servers.

#gen_windows# indexing status appears to be caused by the Windows XP
indexing service. If indexing is active during shutdown you may see that
dialog box. You can read about the Indexing service in the Help and Support
Center. Many people find they prefer not to use the indexing service.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Report in the System and
Application for the last shutdown
nd post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.
