It happens more than I like, that the computer will shut down (actually
restarts) all of a sudden. Seems (though I am not sure) it is after it comes
out of standby/hibernate after a few minutes.
I noticed to the fan was kicking into high gear when it did it, but it may
have been on to begin with.

Is there any way to find out why, all of a sudden the computer decides to
reset itself?

thanks Bruce

Sounds like it's overheating.

You can download Everest (www.lavalys.com) and it can tell you how hot the
hard drives and CPU are running.....

The temperature at which it will shut down should be indicated in the
BIOS.....

If this is a notebook, contact the notebook manufacturer's local service
center. If this is a desktop, turn off the PC, open the case and clean out
the dust bunnies. Ensure there are enough fans in the PC to circulate the
air adequately.
