When I shutdown Windows XP, rather than just shutting the
computer down, I get the message "It is now safe to turn
off your computer." Then the off switch won't work at all
and I have to resort to pulling the power cord. How can I
automate this? It worked fine with Win 98.

Have you tried holding the power button down for 5+ seconds?
