I have WINXP (home), and just installed SP2, seems to work OK, except for
one little problem. Shutdown/Restart takes a lot longer then it used to
(prior to SP2). I've cleaned up the HD, and ran defrag, and it's still
slow.........Any suggestion, ideas, or is this typical with SP2
Thanks
Barry

Thanks for the info. I've checked there earlier, but the problem really
didn't apply....What I did find out (Google) is that if I disable the
"automatic update" it might help..I did it and it worked for me...what do
you think??

I always have windows update disabled!
Once a month I will go there and READ just what each update is for (not all
will apply to everyone except maybe the security ones) then I will install no
more than two at a time.
The only drawback to this is your own persistence.
Updates are usally released around the middle of the month(14th I think)I go
towards the end of the month incase their are problems with an update I
should know it by then via newsletters I get or this group.

Hi Barry

There would seem to be at least one program that is taking longer to shut
itself down than it should be taking. When you shutdown/restart your PC do
any messages appear? Have a look in the Event Viewer to see if any error
messages there may help with the problem - from Start>Run type

eventvwr.msc

then expand the options in the left hand column.

Hi Will
Did what you suggested "eventvwr.msc" I expanded the options,
and got "DISK CLEANUP" with the following message... "Changes to the view
of a console file are saved in your profile. The files in your profile that
store these console changes are using the following amount of disk space on
this computer."
18.73 KB
To permanently delete these files, click Delete Files.
So I clicked "DeleteFiles" (reluctantly), and got another banner that said
"Deleting these files from your profile will remove all of your previous
customizations to console files"
"Are you sure that you want to delete? YES/NO.. I ticked NO ,and
chickened out, since I don't know what to expect..

Disabling the automatic updates can leave your computer vulnerable,
especially if you are not extremely conscientious about checking
manually for updates on a regular basis (and much more often that just
once a month as advocated in another response).

Most Windows updates are issued to correct security problems which, if
not fixed, could leave your computer vulnerable to a hacker attack.
What often happens with these new security updates is that the hackers
and virus creators are among the very first to download these new
security updates.

What they then do is to "reverse engineer" the update so as to
identify the precise location and nature of the security vulnerability
that the update is intended to fix. They then set to work to create a
virus or other attack program to exploit that vulnerability and then
set out looking for computers that have not yet been updated with this
security fix. These are often ready and released within a few days.

So if you are late in getting the new security fixes installed there
is a very much increased likelihood that your computer will be
attacked or infested because of this.

The bottom line - leave the automatic updates function in place. Not
doing so can be suicidal.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck
