Shutdown/Restart

I have the problem that windows wiil not shutdown or restart unless I hold
the Ctrl key down while I click on the shutdown or restart button. This has
been going on for sometime. A few weeks ago I had the task of reinstalling
windows. After I had done so the problem had gone away, however once I
installed all the updates the problem reappeared. It appears that one of the
updates may be causing the problem. Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you looked at the Warning and Error Reports in the System and
Application logs in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hi,

I´m also started having problems after todays august update.

Today after the august updates my notebook doesn´t shutdown nor does
it go into hibernation mode! I have to do a hardware reset to
completely shutdown. After trying to shutdown or hibernate it stays
"stuck" with the blue screen with the phrase saying something like
"The computer is going to hibernation mode". I waited more than 20
minutes before doing a taking the plug and batteries out. My notebook
is a Sony Vaio.

A solution that often helps with a slow shutdown.

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

I followed your instructions and installed User Profile Hive Cleanup
Service but the problem persists. It not a case of slow shutdown, it
simply doesn't shutdown nor does it go into hibernation.

I've tried uninstalling the updates and reinstalling but it also
didn't solve the problem.

Hi,

In my case I don't have any warnings or error messages in the Event
Viewer. I tried to restore to a previous day and the problems
continues. The problem also occurs even when I try to restart, it
simply doesn't shutdown and start again. It always stays in a blue
background with a XP logo saying that windows is going to shutdown/
restart/standby mode...

Hi,

Update:

In safe mode I can shutdown perfectly, doing a restart also works. I
tried the "Last known configuration" but the problem doesn't go away.

This problem only started after I installed the august update
yesterday.

I using Windows Home Edition on a Sony Vaio notebook.

I have had a look at the Windows Update newsgroup. Whilst there seem to
have been quite number of problems with this month's updates nothing
stands out as corresponding to your situation. I can only suggest you
uninstall one update, test to see if the problem has gone and keep
repeating the procedure until it has. Then reinstall all except the last
one to see if you have isolated the problematic update. I would then
reinstall to problematic update to see if the problem returns. You could
have an update that failed to install properly or there may be a bug in
the update.
