Shutdown problems

I am using Windows XP Professional. When I go to
shutdown my computer, it won't shutdown. I go through
the standard proceedure that you do every time when
shuting down XP, but the pointer comes up with an
hourglass next to it for about half a second, and then
nothing happens, and just goes back to the desktop. I do
not get any error messages. Thank you to anyone that can
help.
