Shutdown Problem

Just got my new HP s1400y computer last week. The first problem I
encountered was an intermittent shutdown problem. When I click on
Start/Turn Off Computer an hour glass appears and stays put over 2 minutes.
It finally gets to the Saving Your Settings screen and then lingers another
2 minutes before finally shutting down. If I use the button on the computer
it hangs at the Saving your settings. I have disabled all sounds. I have
deselected Load Services in msconfig. I have tried a utility and a registry
fix that is supposed to close any programs running in the background. I
have had to resort to holding the computer button in until it shuts down.
Restarts are the same. I mentioned that the problem in intermittent but it
hangs more than a fast shut down. I have not yet contacted HP. Hope I
might find some help here first. Thanks.

There's good information on shutdown problems here:

I saw that site when I did a Google search. Only problem is it says <The
necessary patch is included in Windows XP Service Pack 1> or can be
downloaded here. So since I am running XP with SP2 what good is it going to
do to install a fix that should already be fixed. Should I try it anyway?

The other suggestion was to disable the login in screen which I did
immediately since I am the only user.

If you have SP2 you have all of the patches included in SP1.

You are indeed wise Pennywise! I have restarted and shutdown both ways 3
times in a row. I really think it is fixed after installing the fix you
recommended. Thank you so much. I didn't really understand all the
explanation about what the program does but as long as it worked that is all
that matters. Keep up the good work.
