Shutdown problem even after SP 1

Hi:

Windows XP Pro SP 1 on my ThinkPad R40/2681 rarely, if
ever, shuts down properly. (I thought SP1 was supposed
to solve most shutdown problems--apparently not, or at
least not mine.) Unfortunately, I don't have any time
right now to try to run through all of the diagnostics
suggested at the Shutdown problem page. There does seem
to be a correlation between how long I've been up and
running a particular session--if I've had the computer on
for less than an hour, I can shutdown or restart with no
problems. Longer than that and it won't shutdown. I
don't literally mean "one hour"--just short time vs. long
time.

I'm mainly posting this question to find out if there are
reports of conflicts involving any of the specific
devices I have attached to my computer and applications
that I'm running that I should be looking for when I do
have a chance to start sorting out device conflicts etc.

My candidates for shutdown conflicts are:
--Logitech Wheel Mouse
--HP DeskJet 952c
--Macally USB hub
--Seti@Home 3.latest version
--Access IBM 4.0/Update Connector 3.5
--Symantec AntiVirus latest version

I have my doubts about the USB devices, as I still have
the shutdown problem without any of them plugged in. Any
thoughts?

What happens when you try to shut down?
If you restart after going to msconfig & disabling all startup items, does
it work?
Have you tried updating your BIOS?

Laptop computers often have proprietary power management
drivers/software that is NOT included in the generic SP's.

Have you checked with IBM for driver updates?

Next time you shut down, try the following:

start a command window

type:

net stop spooler

close the window

and shut down.

This is what I've always needed to do under W2K to resolve
the "long shut down time" issue, but I haven't needed to use
it with XP.

Hello:

First, thanks V. Green re the spooler force-quit
suggestion ("net stop spooler"). Alas, it doesn't work.
Thanks, Rock, for offering the links, but I'm one step
ahead of you. Suffice to say, been there done that no
dice.

What happens when you try to shut down?

It freezes with the desktop pattern on display. The
toolbar, desktop icons, etc., are all gone. It sits.
And it sits. And it sits. I've let the computer sit as
long as a couple of hours like this finally just pulling
the plug and removing the battery to force a shutdown.
This is not the slow shutdown problem I've seen mentioned
on the Net. This is no shutdown, period.
If you restart after going to msconfig & disabling all startup items, does
it work?

Haven't done that yet, but I'll give it a shot when I
have time (ha! I'm preparing for doctoral oral exams and
have no time run through anything fancier than unplug and
replug right now. Posting for the moment is just an
exercise in wishful thinking--I don't need to worry about
a fussy computer when I'm doing exam preps, and I don't
have time to work through a lot of things that I might
otherwise do.)
Have you tried updating your BIOS?

IBM just released an update for the BIOS last week.
Haven't installed it yet (see the above), but I'm
hoping. I mentioned various IBM software as problem-
abetting candidates as the Update program has also
stopped working. Maybe they're connected, and maybe the
ain't. Anyway, I'm just fishing around for ideas here.
Thanks for the suggestions thus far.

Cheers,
Carl

Good luck and post back on the progress.
