Cancel Shutdown

I often leave various tasks running for a few hours when I go to bed, so I
have some shortcuts that switch off my PC after one or two hours.

Occasionally I also want to cancel a shutdown request (ie and immediate one)
and so I tried using the same approach as before: shutdown -a.

However, although I can get the PC to shutdown exactly as I wish, the
shutdown abort command merely results in an error dialog (I'm not at the
machine so I cant repeat the error message verbatim - but it wasnt clear
what the problem was).

Should shutdown -a work? Are there some caveats that I dont know about?
Maybe there are some alternatives?

Thanks in advance

You can only use -a during the timeout period.
You can use 3rd party tools. I recommend WinOFF.
Features i like:
Shutdown when CPU usage is xx for xx time. [ Usefull when runnung
Antivirus because they use Cpu a lot ]
Take a screenshot before something. [ What is happening
before the shutdown ]
Shutdown according to your system clock.
Shutdown after specified time.
Options - Suspend , hibernate, shut down, log off, restart , power off, hang
up modem, lock computer , force shutdown.
Can be used in command line mode
