First, remove Norton completely: Run regedit, and clean 2 entries:
1. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Symantec
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec

Delete folders:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Program Files\Symantec
C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Symantec
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

Now download the Norton Removal tool - Freeware

ok, here is an update..i successfully got the Norton antivirus 2006 software
deleted /uninstalled thru Symantec..They had a tool removal link for my
version..I then was able to successfully re-install it without incident..
I ran a full scan of my computer, no viruses.

As far as the problem with my "shutting down XP"..it still remains a
problem..i still have to manually push the button on my Laptop..

I am still searching for a solution for that..i would love any more help you
all can offer..

FYI: this particular problem with the shutdown only started when I was
trying to install the upgrade for the Norton..before then my laptop
performed beautifully..

Many Thanks in advance,

Hi again, today I went on the Symantec site, and found a fix for the shutdown
problem under Search I found this...

"cannot shutdown the computer after installing Norton Antivirus 2005 or 2006"

I found this under "support" Symantec.com

For windows XP..there solution was:
open Norton
click Options
Choose Norton Antivirus if you see a menu
In the left pane, double click Auto -Protect
Click Advanced
In the Right pane, uncheck "Scan floppy disk in A:for boot viruses when
shutting down.
Click Ok
Exit Norton Antivirus.
Shut down the computer.

(Windows XP SP2)

So, as of right now, everything seems fine again..

Many Thanks for the support.
