suddenly my win2000 machine is "blowing up" at the very end of the shutdown
sequence (a message flashes on the screen for an instant -- too fast to
read) causing it to reboot...thus i can never shut it down normally. is
there a way to capture the shutdown sequence so i have chance to see what
the error message is flashing up at the end. something about DRIVER... then
poof! and reboot. thanks

How ingenious kids are these days.
Boot to a Command Prompt
"type" SFC /SCANNOW
after you through
"type" CHKDSK /R/F
Boot and see if you get back up to speed.
If not
Go into the BIOS and change the boot sequence to CD first.
Boot using the W2K CD, choose Install, when prompted, choose "Repair"

good computing,
don

Check your event logs.

Right click on My Computer & choose Manage. Expand System Tools and view
your event logs for anything abnormal. Look at www.eventid.net for
explanations of common event log entries.

hmmm... that's an interesting start. i can see where SaveDump events
started on the evening of 10/10 (and everytime after when i tried to shut
down). i can't figure out how to read the DMP file yet. i found the
dumpchk utility on the win2k disk, but still struggling with it -- can't
figure out how to read the dmp file. i'm onto KB article 315263 so will
keep trying.. thank you.
