Windows 2000 Won't Shut Down

Have Win2000 with Service Pack 4. Was working fine. I
downloaded/installed all the MS Win2000 updates for the MS website

Now, when I shut down 'puter, it goes thru motions of a shutdown, then
I hear a little click like it is shutting down (which is a normal
sound), but the screen goes to all-black with a white blinking cursor
(looks a lot like a DOS-mode screen) -- so, 'puter has not ACTUALLY
shutdown.

Ran registry fixer, but that didn't do anything.

Ran MSCONFIG, but not smart enuf to know what should/shouldn't be
running at start-up (for example, MOBSYNC is not running/box is not
checked).

So, basically to shut it down, I have to manually push-in and hold the
main power button for about 5 seconds.

When I started 'puter in SAFE mode, it did shutdown correct.

Thanx for any ideas.

Look in your event logs for clues....and also, before shutting down, try
going to task manager to see what processes are running. It's possible that
an application hasn't closed properly and is preventing Windows from
shutting down.

Re msconfig - where did you get it from ?W2k doesn't have msconfig (although
the one from WinXP works just fine in it). Mobsync is for offline files and
you probably don't need it running, so that shouldn't be a problem.

downloaded msconfig years ago -- nice to have.

About my problem -- I've recently downloaded several Hotfixes -- could
that be a likely place to search out my problem, or is it likely
something else?

Re Taskmanager -- not sure what ought to be running, so what/how do I
select in TaskMgr -- just pick & choose? My concern is that I might
close something I should't have messed with.
